Welcome to the Rochelle Eye Care Center!
Office of Dr. Reid Mlsna - Optometrist
MATRIX VISION FIELD ANALYZER: This instrument is used to check the sensitivity of the retina to stimulus. Often called a peripheral vision test, this device is used to detect areas of loss of sensitivity in the field of vision. This test is useful for monitoring visual changes due to Glaucoma, diabetic changes, retinal defects and it can even detect certain kinds of brain tumors, pituitary lesions and compressive lesions along the optic nerve pathway. The screening version of this test is done on every patient as part of the pre-test sequence in order to provide a better "picture" of eye's health. Early detection of vision field defects from glaucoma or other problems is key to the preservation of vision.
AUTO-REFRACTOR / AUTO-KERATOMETER: This instrument provides a quick estimate of the required prescription for a patient's eyes. It provides a starting point near the final prescription which greatly reduces the number of times the Doctor needs to ask you, "Which is better one or two?" This device also measures the curve of the cornea allowing for an accurate fit of contact lenses.
NON-CONTACT TONOMETER: Also known as the "AIR PUFF", this device measures the pressure inside the front chamber of the eye. The pressure is an important factor in the health of the eye because it is an indicator for GLAUCOMA and other problems. Glaucoma is a blinding disease that is almost always painless and goes unnoticed as it collapses the field of vision starting at the peripheral vision. The air puff method is a good screening for pressure, it is quick, non-invasive and painless - although often surprising.
OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHER (OCT): The OCT is a great advance in diagnostic technology. This specialized instrument uses a scanning laser to reveal the structure of the retina. This allows the doctor to see changes that would otherwise be undetectable. Changes like the small pockets of fluid that occur at the early stages of diabetic macular edema or wet macular degeneration. Also changes like the deposits of proteins that signal the onset of dry macalar degeneration. Microscopic tears or breaks in the retina are easily seen with the OCT. This device will indicate if a retinal defect only affects a single layer of the retina or the whole thickness of the retina. The OCT is also one of the best instruments for the early detection of damage to nerves of the retina from Glaucoma. The OCT used to be found only in the offices of retina specialists, but because this technology is so important in the early detection of Glaucoma as well as other retinal problems, we felt it important to have it available right here in our own community!
DIGITAL RETINAL AND EXTERNAL PHOTOGRAPHY: This is an excellent tool for documenting various disorders of the retina as well as the outer portions of the eye. The high resolution digital camera provides excellent pictures that are used to document and monitor conditions and their locations. With this device, we can show you your own eyes and explain what is happening. This, also, allows us to provide a patient's physician with a report and exact documentation to allow for better integrated health care. Think of it this way, it's your health - would you rather have a health condition documented by a drawing of that condition or photograph?
